What began as the Hammond Humane Society in 1941 has grown into an organization with three distinct entities sharing one vision: to be the leader in the humane treatment of domestic and wild animals.
Our state-of-the-art animal shelter in Munster supports over 4,000 dogs and cats annually, and helps hundreds of families through our pet food pantry, low-cost spay and neuter clinic, and diversion programs.
The Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center in Valparaiso housed over 3,000 orphaned and injured wildlife animals last year, and the numbers continue to grow as we expand our reach to over 26 counties in Indiana. The Wildlife Center also has a robust education program, allowing our community to learn about the protection and preservation of our state's native species.
In Highland, PAWS Resale Plus is a one-stop-shop for upcycled treasures and local artisan goods. There's something new to find every time you shop, and proceeds directly support shelter pets and wildlife patients.
Over the past 80 years, the changes to our organization have been great, but our commitment to animal care remains the same. We’re here to help adoptive families make good choices for their new pets, assist families with keeping their pets in their homes, and provide a location for injured and orphaned wildlife to receive life-saving care. Our values have remained steadfast, and it’s why we are still around to serve new generations. Humane Indiana’s success is due to "The Good We Do Together," through our team of dedicated staff, passionate volunteers, and generous donors.
